Sorry [profile] sweetjimmytoand [profile] phishnbear.  I fully intended to take some nice digital photos of my new drums and me wearing the new CAN shirt.

However...

...someone took it upon them selves to break into our home on Monday and make off with all 3 of our digital cameras, my laptop, my nice headphones, and a few other assorted items. They didn't really take too much.  Time must not have been on their side.  But, the things they did take are very sad and annoying to lose.  The laptop is password protected, so they would not be able to access my private documents and memories, but the sad thing is neither will I.  Anyway, apparently they robbed a couple other homes in the area, as they have a description of a female with a size 8 shoe who drives a Gold Honda Accord using it's spare tire.  Have you seen her?  If you have, tell her I will glady give her some money for my stuff and even buy her a sandwhich.  Given the small, small space she managed to squeeze through, she clearly needs it.

Anyway, as violated as we feel, we're trying to chalk it up as a life lesson, and the impetus to get some kind of security system that either scares someone dead or shocks intruders with electricty.

Thankfully, my new drums weren't stolen, or any music equipment.  So, I took a quick picture with my camera phone:

Yes, that is a cowbell. :O)  The seller threw that in with the throne and the crappy cymbal stand for $30.  I measured the drums Jimmy, and here is what I found:  Kick Drum is 22", Floor Tom is 16", Medium Rack Tom is 13", Smaller Rack Tom is 12", and the snare is 14".  The kit is a bit shinier than how the pic came out.  So what do you think? Did I choose well?  First opportunity for drum advice: I need a kick pedal, high-hat stands, cymbal stands and some cymbals.  Should I go for a package deal?

Obviously, the more you buy, the better the deal.
As for hardware ... folks try to sell you on heavy, clunky "pro" stuff but I a find lighter, more modest line from a reputabile manufacturer is the best way to go. I'm a heavy hitter and I use Pearl's low-end stuff. It's a little more expensive than some of the Korean - made heavy - duty items, but in the end, they last longer.

Go pro with the kick pedal ... it's kind of the one bit of hardware that you shouldn't skimp on. Again, it's all about feel and what feels best for you. Stick with a name brand ... but no need to go boutique at this level.

Cymbals ... stay away from entry level items. Build a collection over time. Spend some cash here ... Zildjian/Sabian or wherever your heart lies. Don't skimp here. As I like to say ... there's no point spending $1000 on a suit if you are going to wear $20 shoes with it.

I play drums a bit, and I agree. The kick pedal is definitely not something to skimp on. And I've also found that if you aren't moving the drum kit a lot, then lighter hardware is perfectly fine. The only time I suggest heavy stuff is if you're putting it in a van and breaking it down all the time..

You play the drums too? You're quite a multi-talented fellow. Hopefully I'll get my practice room set up soon and record a bit. I'll keep you posted and perhaps we can play some music this summer.

Sweet, thanks for the help Jimmy! I think I'll start with the kick pedal and the high hat stand and cymbals. I was checking them out on Musician's Friend... what's with the plethora of double kick pedals? Do they think every apiring drummer is a speed metal freak? On second thought, that cheater beater looks pretty cool. :O)

well, obviously, no apoligies needed!

it sounds good that you have a healthy mindset about what happened... if our laptop stolen at this point i'd think it was the end of the world. all the music i work on is on here, so that says it all right there...

i'll hold out hope for a good ending to all this...

Thanks, so do I. However, after a week it seems like it's probably not going to turn up. It does feel like I lost an appendage.

Aw, I'm sorry. That reminds me that I should make backups more often and encrypt my home directory. This laptop is becoming way too much a part of my life.

Thanks Dave! I'm the same way with my laptop. I don't think I lost too much, but I'm sure I'll remember something that I'll really regret that I'm not able to recover.
